Experiment #4 In Media Res

Experiment #4: In Media Res
Rhysand’s Curse

Oh the joys of glorious chaos. It all begins with the screams; the high-pitched screams of the women followed by the war cries of those foolish enough to fight. They know they cannot win and he knows how easy it is to slaughter the lot of them and deduce their homes to ash. The village of Morva was bright with flame then gone The thick black smoke of destruction billowed high into the early morning sky still pearly pink by the sun’s shy rays. Rhysand stood amongst the unfolding chaos watching his forces with boredom; victory amongst these lower peasants was much too easy. Grima was diverting his forces to the east to cut off the escaping villagers, what a useless lot they were. Several smaller villages dotted the plains that led up to the temple. It would be his cousin's job to have his troops sack the villages and keep them distracted long enough for Rhysand and his men to get to the temple. Leave Grima to anything, what a leap of faith that would be hopefully the idiot could lead the charge without embarrassing him. These lowlife villages were nothing but cheap pocket change in comparison to whatever treasure lie within that stony temple on the hill. The temple was a tall looming fortress with thick with fog and black smoke; made of thick jutting stone wrapped in ancient runes and towered high with river rock. The temple was dedicated to whatever heathen gods or goddesses the horse riders worshiped but it was an ancient cultural core to their people. Destroying it would cripple the tribe, and weaken them to further attack. It was a perfect for the taking. Upon the stone steps leading to the entrance of the temple stood from the darkened entrance a harsh looking woman with a long willowy frame; the head priestess no doubt. She was dressed it what looked to be a rough brown gown with brass bangles around her bare ankles. Her long dark hair was plaited in a myriad of tiny braids weaved within a headdress of small twisted branches and her piercing eyes stared daggers a headdress of small twisted branches and her piercing eyes stared daggers at the incoming invaders at the foot at her door. The head priestess held out her palms in front of her with a look of anger burning through her green irises. "Stop in the name of the gods! You approach the temple of the godly family Ragrok, Theodywn, Taran and Máire. You dare not come a step further!" She took a step forwards as several other priestesses stood behind her to create a blockade from the entrance. What a nuisance, they were blocking their entrance. "I don’t think your imaginary friends in the heavens will do anything to stop me,” he said to the head priestess with a wicked look upon his face.

"You barbaric heathens dare to insult our gods, I wouldn't do such things if I were you this is a sacred place" she said her voice deepening and her eyes met his in an aggressive manner. "You are free to be here for worship but if you think you can pillage this holy place then you are gravely mistaken..."
"That's exactly what I intend on doing today" Rhysand said calmly as he adjusted his gloves. His men were now very close behind; ready to charge forwards the moment he gave the signal. "I’ll tell you what. Give me what I want now, or let me take it by force. It’s your choice."  "Is that a threat? I warn you now if you pillage this temple grave consequences beyond imagination will happen to you" she said menacingly and stood up straight looking back towards the priestesses. "Come along ladies I have warned him of what is to come. If this barbarian wishes to ignore them then it is his own doing. You may pass inside but do not say that I did not warn you sea demon." The head priestess then turned aside and stepped back inside. The other priestesses followed obediently behind and sat in the middle of the giant temple their eyes watching for their next move. "Barbarian?" Rhysand scoffed. "I take offense to that. "Those stupid priestesses would pay. He lifted a hand and closed it into a fist, signaling his warriors would attack. The warriors streamed forwards, swinging axes and swords, with the prince standing back and taking all the action in. It was relatively easy to take the temple. The men streamed inside smashing statues and the grand alters with their massive axes and began ransacking anything of value inside throwing it out into giant piles. Within no time, Rhysand was able to walk up the steps and into the temple to find what he was looking for. In the middle were four golden objects, supposedly one dedicated to each of their gods. Each one was individually worth a fortune and ancient.  The four golden treasures stood upon large rough stone pedestals with light from a skylight above shining down on the sacred items. Each was beautifully detailed and intricately carved detailing the stories surrounding each deity.  Rhysand walked around the pedestals slowly, very much aware of the high priestess's presence. "They say that these relics are over a thousand years old,” he said, reaching out for the one in the middle. "As far as I'm concerned, they just look like statues of gold to me. Perfect for the taking."  "I will issue you one last warning Viking man you may be able to steal what you will from men but you cannot steal from the gods without retribution. The moment you take them your fate is sealed. Be wise and leave while you can" she hissed at making her way towards the foreign invader "do not lift it from its pedestal mortal you will be punished."  His eyes met hers, matching some of the blue gems inlaid in one of the statues. "I don’t believe in your heathen myths,” he told her before he lifted the first of the statues from the pedestal, tucking it away into a satchel he had over his shoulder. "A wrong choice. It's a shame you will believe in them soon enough" she hissed running towards him with a sadistic smile on her face, her eyes lighting up with evil intent. "You will believe in our gods now!" The priestess grabbed hold of his left arm with the ironclad grip of a man and her hand began to tremor.  Before Rhysand could draw his sword, the witch woman was upon him. When she grabbed him, it was as though he had stuck his arm straight through a roaring blaze and melted his flesh off. It was pure agony. He dropped to his knees, her grip relentless, and the burning went on for what felt like hours before it abruptly stopped. The stench of charred flesh was the only thing he smelled. He lifted his head to look at his arm, stunned that it wasn’t burned to a stump, and instead was covered with some sort of black, winding markings. "With that the gods have cursed you. All actions come with a cost Viking man. Do not say I did not warn you." She hissed releasing his arm and grinned wickedly. With a snarl, Rhsyand leaped to his f feet and grabbed the woman by the throat, slamming her back into a column. "What did you do to me?" He hissed, fingers digging into her flesh.
"What did you do to my arm?" "I told you already you barbarian, you stole from the gods and now you are cursed with everything that you would have ever wanted" she forced out her hands going to pry his grip off of her throat though her eyes never left his. "Did I not warn you that the consequences of stealing would be beyond your comprehension? Are you so stupid as to think you could run from the watch of Ragrok, Theodywn, Taran, and Máire?" The priestess lent him a rather serpentine smile as the sky around began to darken with storm clouds, thunder crashing in the distance. Rhysand's eyes shone with fury, his face bone white. He drew his sword, pointing it at the priestess. He briefly noticed that whatever she did to him burned all his armor and clothing off on his arm. He drew his sword, ready to run the woman through. "What curse are you speaking of?" he repeated.  "You fool, you stole... you stole from Ragrok himself. He sees all, young barbarian. He watches all and can see into the very soul of men. He saw you; he saw what you will become. He knows your every desire and wish. He sees who you are, for the brute that you present yourself as and dug into your heathen soul the moment you placed your palms against his holy relics" she rasped in a low breathy voice. "He saw what you wanted and gave you just that. You use your brute force to conquer and kill and he gave you the tool to do just that… at a price no less. He curses you with an arm that maintains the force of a hundred men but as much as you conquer you will be drained. You will slowly have the life sucked out of you until you are no weaker than a dried leaf on a shriveled branch. You will die weak at your enemies' hand and leave no legacy behind, your legacy like your own life will be cut short at the hands of Ragrok.”

Word Count Wednesday

Word Count Wednesday (5/10/17)

What I am working on now?

I just finished an essay for my poetry class and the dramatic script. Now I have to finish all of my half finished experiments. Right now i'm working finishing the In Media Res on my cursed viking, my children story, and my podcast idea. I've drafted a pretty crappy looking map so i'm going to redraw it  so it looks crisper and more presentable (it's the map from my narrative assignment.) Lastly There is the poetry which I am stumped on... I'm not a poet but I will do my best not to send anything too cringeworthy.

Word Count: 4,136 (WOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!)

How do I feel about the process?

I'm feeling pretty good but the end of the year brain fog is starting to take hold and I must power through. It's hard returning to half finished work because it was abandoned for a reason... I lack inspiration for some of them and it'll be a challenge to write. Though I found that I work really well when I know I have a weighty deadline looming (like a failed grade if it is not finished.) Though I'm having the most problem with writing poems, they are so expertly crafted that anything I write is either flat by comparison or it just doesn't work at all. I will try to post as I finish these experiments as I hate to publish unfinished or half baked work.

What am I reading now?

ACT I SCENE I

The back patio of an outside bar at night. Present are two tables, four chairs, and an umbrella. Leaning against the outside wall of the bar is Trudy smoking a cigarette looking physically tense. Enter Marcel. He looks around cautiously and makes eye contact with Trudy and gives her a very charming smile.

Marcel:            You know those things kill right? (Chuckles) What are you doing out here                                     alone? I thought you were back home working on the case.

Trudy:                        You’d think so, but no I needed to get out of there. There is only so much                                     time you can look at a case file without wanting to throw it across the room… y’know. I just needed some fresh air and a smoke.

Marcel:            Fresh air and a smoke? Two words I never thought would go together. I thought you quit those things a long time ago. (He walks over to her and leans up against the wall next to her.)

Trudy:                        (Looks over at him a takes another drag. She gives his a wistful look                                     before exhaling smoke.) Some things are quit, I thought I was done but every time I say that I end up with another one in my mouth. Besides I needed one tonight, between the case and Walter I-

Marcel:            (Interrupts midsentence) Walter? What’s wrong with Walter?

Trudy:                        Well…(Looks hesitant and takes another drag) Well we had another fight,                         it seems that the so-called miracle marriage counseling isn’t helping anything it’s just making him angrier. He wants me to retire and stay home with the kids… he says I’m crazy for wanting to stay. I got mad and told him he could go shove it where the sun don’t shine that I could do whatever I liked. He yelled back and said I was avoiding our problems and the main one was my job. A long story short we yelled and argued over it and I stormed out for a cigarette (She looks prickled and sighs in                                                 frustration)

Marcel:            Well what the h*ll does he know anyways he doesn’t know how good of a cop you are anyways. He’s an idiot I don’t know why you even put up with him.

Trudy:                        I don’t know either; he’s not a bad guy Marcel. Y’know he’s not… he just                                     gets these ideas of how he wants life and he’s too stubborn to give them up.

Marcel:            Yeah, I know.  So what are you going to do now?

Trudy:                        Well right now I’m going to finish off this cigarette, get a drink, and take a                         walk around the block before going back to work. After all that’s what’s needed to be done now. The rest will have to wait…

Marcel:            Does that mean you are calling it quits? (Look of both sympathy and                                     intrigue. His hand goes to reach for hers but hesitates)

Trudy:                        (Looks down at the ground then at her cigarette taking another drag and                      sighs. She then looks down at his hand and smiles softly) Some things are hard to quit Marcel (She shakes her head. She throws her cigarette to the ground and snubs it out with her foot) Y’know how hard it is to quit something once it grabs hold of you… we both know.

Marcel:            Trudy I- (Stops midsentence)

(Both of their phones begin to ring and they both go to answer their cells)

Marcel:            Hello?

Trudy:                        Hello? (Long pause then pulls away from the phone turning to her phone)                           D*mnit! Marcel we gotta go. He’s struck again. (Returns attention to her cell phone) We’ll be right there, text us the address.

Exit Marcel and Trudy

ACT I SCENE II

An apartment located in Jackowo’s eastside. Present is a living room set of a couch, table, chairs, a lamp, and a broken clock which are all tipped over. The room is disheveled. On the wall the words “Śmierć dla grzeszników” is written in red followed by the drawing of a bird. In the far corner are the bodies of three women, all three are bound, beaten, half naked, and lying in a pool of blood. Inside stand Norman and Dorian taking pictures and taking back the door. Enter Trudy and Marcel stepping under the yellow cation tape.

Trudy:               (Walks in and looks at the bodies with a look of disgust then turns to Dorian. She pulls on latax gloves and steps over a chair) What do we have here?

Dorian:            Triple rape homicide. Victims are Wanda Rudzinski aged forty-nine and her two daughters Agata and Róża aged sixteen. All three recent were immigrants from Warsaw Poland. The b*stard left them hogtied, all three have the same hit to the left temporal lobe and the right side of their torso is riddled with stab wounds. Neighbors found the bodies.

Marcel:            Cause of death?

Dorian:             I wouldn’t know until I do the initial autopsy but my guess would the puncture to their renal arteries.

Marcel:            English please.

Dorian:            They were all stabbed in their right kidney.

Trudy:              How long have they been here?

Dorian:            About seven or eight hours.

Trudy:             Why would you say that?

Dorian:             (Points to the broken clock on the floor) In the struggle they knocked down the clock and it stopped ticking stopping it at 4:02. If the killer stuck with his normal time frame then he killed them within the hour. Again it’s not set in stone until I do my report.

Marcel:            The Warsaw whacker strikes again but he’s changed pattern. Why change                    the pattern so far into his game?

Norman:             He’s definitely evolving as a killer. C’here, look at the blood here (Motions Marcel) all three victims were stabbed in their sides and the blood has pooled rather than sprayed. Judging by this alone he’s leaning from his last four victims, the last victims were stabbed all over but did                                     receive some blows to the renal arteries which proves the last set were experiments.

Marcel:             So he’s testing the waters to see what ways are the most effective to kill

Norman:            Exactly.

Enter Nicholas looking extremely sick

Nicholas:            Um. Hey it’s about time you guys got here I’ve got some witnesses who                                     said they saw what happened.

Trudy:                Who are you?

Nicholas:            Officer O’Hare, I was the first on the scene…

Trudy:                 First homicide case?

Nicholas:             Yeah. Yeah it is. (Slow nod, looks as though he will vomit)

Trudy:                 (Pats him on the back) They never get any easier, why don’t you take us                     over to them and then you can go tape off the rest of the building.

Nicholas nods and leads Trudy and Marcel out of the room to the hall where Mikolaj and Ida stand with another officer. Both look clearly traumatized and very nervous.

Nicolas:            Careful they don’t speak too much English; we’ve been trying to get a translator in for the last hour or so but have at it. They said they saw what happened I hope you guys can understand the rest; it’s all in Polish.

Exit Nicholas and the other officer.

Marcel:            You saw what happened?

Mikolaj:            Jes! Jes! That’s vhat I’ve been sayin’ vhe saw man! Wracaliśmy z pracy i                                     wspinaliśmy się po schodach, gdy usłyszeliśmy krzyki pochodzące z mieszkania sąsiada!

Marcel:             Whoa whoa slow down… Let’s take it one step at a time. You said you saw a man. What man? What did he look like? (Pulls out his note pad and pencil and begins to jot down)

Mikolaj:            UGH! Jes! Vhe saw man. Man… bardzo wysoki i bardzo chudy (making a                         gesture that he was very tall and slim)

Marcel:             Tall and skinny? What about his face? (makes a gesture towards his face)

Ida:                   Vhe see no face. But he have uh... how say brązowy. Uh... (Grabs at her                                     hair and points to her jacket)

Trudy:                 Brown hair?

Ida:                     Jes! He hadda brown hair.

Trudy:                 And who are you? Um... kim jesteś? (Attempts Polish looking hesitant)

Mikolaj:            Vhe live um… Mieszkamy w budynku po drugiej stronie korytarza. Apartment 12B (pointing to the door behind them.) Nikolaj Wiatrowski and Ida Wiatrowski… an’ who you are?

Trudy:                I’m detective Trudy Delmare CPD and this is my partner Detective Marcel                         Fredericks (Shows badge. Mikolaj reaches for in and stares. He nods and hands it back to her.)

Marcel:             Did you see anything else besides the back of his head?

Mikolaj:            I no understand… vhat about his head? (Turns to Ida in confusion and begins to converse with her in nervous Polish)

Marcel:             I mean did you see anything else?

Mikolaj:           No, vhe see nahthing… nic.

Ida:                  We no see but um… Słyszałem, jak krzyczą. Usłyszałem, jak krzycze na nich (grabs at her ear). Poor girls scream... Mikolaj grab me an’ push in. Vhe hide an’ see man... vhe vhait until he gone, long time maybe many hour then I-I-I call Policja!

Trudy:               Good good, you called the police?

Ida:                    Jes! Jes! That vhat I say! I call Policja an’ Mikolaj... Mikolaj saw in.

Mikolaj:            I push Ida in home. Tell call policja, I go to check an’ I saw... Zobaczyłem, co zrobił dla moich sąsiadów i wbiegłem do domu i zamknąłem drzwi, dopóki nie przyszła policja. (gets overly emotional thinking about it) The wall in say  “Śmierć dla grzeszników” with redbird...

Trudy:               Yes do you know what that means?

Ida:                    Jes, Śmierć dla grzeszników mean death to sinners... did they do wrong? Vhy vhuld he hurt Wanda? Wanda very nice an her gurls very good... Agata an Róża no trouble gurls.

Marcel:            What about the red bird?

Mikolaj:            Red bird? In Warsaw were we from red bird mean uh… how you say firebird. Warsaw symbol is firebird.

Marcel:            Firebird? You mean like a phoenix?

Mikolaj:           Jes! Firebird or phoenix, it mean destroy then rise again just like Warsaw city.

Trudy:              Mr. and Mrs. Wiatrowski would you be able to come down to the police station to give a full report and meet with our sketch artist? Um… Wejdź na posterunek policji i pomóż? (Again attempting Polish)

Ida:                   Vhat if he come back? Is vhis man kill us too?

Mikolaj:            Is vhis man the morderca from paper? Warsaw H-whacker?

Marcel:             We will make sure that if you help us he will not come back. If you help we can catch whoever did this to Wanda and her girls.

Micolaj:            (Looks hesitent and sighs with a nod) Jes we help. (Turns to Ida) Ida Chodź, weź płaszcz, kochanie, które nam pomożemy.

Exit Mikolaj and Ida

(Trudy and Marcel enter back into the crime scene where everyone is gather around the body of Róża Rudzinski)

Dorian:            Hey we found something! (Lifts up the hand of Róża. She is wearing pink acrylic names. One nail is chipped off and in the jag of the broken acrylic is a long strand of black hair)

Trudy:              What is that?

Dorian:            A foreign hair, I think we may have our first real clue. Ladies and gentlemen I do believe this maybe our killer’s hair.

Marcel:             It’s black… I thought the witness said the man had brown hair.

Trudy:              You should know at this point most witness testimony isn’t always spot on. So the hair color changed.

Marcel:             Yeah changed color not length, look at the size of this thing it’s too long to be our killers

Trudy:              Unless we aren’t looking for a man, our killer might be a woman.

Marcel:             A woman who rapes other women, I don’t think so. The four other victims had semen present on their bodies unless we are looking at a couple. An accomplice, maybe?

Trudy:              But if we are going off of witness testimony then wouldn’t there be another person in the stairwell if it were a couple?

Marcel:            Well if it’s not that then who the h*ll does this hair belong to and why is it tangled in one of our sixteen-year old’s broken fingernail?

(Fades to black: End Scene)

Narrative Assignment #2 (Chapter 2)

From Where the Stars Fall (Temporary Title) Chapter 2

Ah, Favershim what a sh*thole. The proud gleaming city stood as a magnificent monument of how far the mighty had risen and how far they had fallen. The bright metropolitan area shined brilliant in the distance while the shadow lands of its lower east side lay in a permanent state of urban decay. The girl slithered out of the dark alleyway and onto the open dingy street with a look of determination fixed upon her black brow. She strolled along the small brittle cobblestone street caked thick with stagnant mud and god knows what, sewage most likely it certainly smelled the part. Oh god the smell of the streets was caustic! The packed street heavy with sweaty unwashed bodies stomping around in the lingering stench of raw human sewage was enough to make one sick. The girl scrunched her nose passing a particularly vile area by her boots and turned her eyes away from the ground to the sky. The world above lay misted in a thick smoggy embrace that gripped the entire city and fueled by the coal black smoke from leaning chimneys and factory towers. It was a shame; on a good night one could see a star or two fighting to shine it’s light beside the moon hanging in the eternal sepia tinted sky but not tonight. No tonight the last of the summer days would rear it’s ugly head blowing in the muggy humidity and the stale air through the city before the crisp chill of autumn took its course.
Block by block she passed rows of tenements lined up between narrow alleys each one in a different stage of decomposition; all grey weathered look a likes with filthy windows and peeling paint rolling in great curls up the creaky structure. She turned a corner stepping over a very questionable puddle before making her way to the broad promenade illuminated in red lighting and packed tight with hundreds of people. The intense scent of cigarette smoke and liquor met with the cheap perfume and the sickeningly sweet smell of poppy milk hit her immediately as she entered Favershim’s red-light district. Brothels lined the corners each painted some ungodly gaudy shade of red or pink or gold that was chipping away with wear. The whores who walked the street looked no better than the decaying slums around them, girls who looked no younger than twelve and no older than thirty stood at their respected corners half starved and sporting stained loosely laced stays. Most of the older ones bore crooked smiles filled with missing teeth while the others left in place had yellowed into a solid tint of sickly yellow. The girl made her way down the street passing some with freshly bruised and battered faces hidden under bright rouge smashed upon their cheeks. It could have been a rough john or a violent pimp or a street fight with another whore but in the end who cared she certainly didn’t but the poor things did look awful and too young to be getting into such trouble. The rest of the street teamed with activity of exchanges, people threw themselves into alleys to exchange flesh for pocket change, the surly johns groping at their laced bodices while the ladies of the night felt them right up each bearing no shame. Their disgusting breaths of liquor and poppy milk mingled with the stench of the city added to the already putrid odor.
It was at the corner between the colorfully dressed whores that something odd caught her eye; it was a young boy standing atop a large wooden crate with a small stack of unread newspapers at his side. The boy looked to be about twelve or so, he was rather cute with a face full of freckles and a shaggy mop of sandy hair tucked under a newsboy’s cap but much too skinny for a kid his age to be. His smile said it all; the teeth were crooked but formed a mischievous smile that was rather infectious the longer she stared at it. “Lookey whot I got ‘ere ladies an’ gents, fresh from this mornin’s stall its The Favershim Fever printed daily! Read all ‘bout it! Don’t be shy ladies an’ gents jus’ a couple coppers fer world class news,” he shouted from his box shaking around the printed newspaper in hand with passionate intensity. The girl crossed her arms and approached bearing a smirk upon her mouth “Oi whot are ye doin’ sellin’ the bloody mornin’ paper in the middle o’ the night boy?” The boy looked up at her with his contagious smile and crossed his arms “Well It ain’t none o’ yer d*mn business lady unless ye wanna buy one, if yer real nice I’ll give it to ye fer a discounted rate. Pretty ladies always get a discount from me iffin’ they’re lookin’ to buy.” Oh this kid was good, he was defiantly a salesman and might actually make something out of himself one day. The girl grinned clearly amused and crossed her arms in return “ye cheeky b*stard I bet ye didn’t sell all o’ ‘em all an’ now yer scramblin’ to get rid o’ ‘em off before yer employer tans yer ‘ide.”
“Why don’t ye ‘elp a fella out aye? Buy a paper an’ save me beautiful ass from bein’ beaten black an’ blue. Whot d’ya say lady?”
“Hmmm. Well a temptin’ offer that may be, I’ll bite whot does the bloody paper say then?”
“Buy it an’ find out fer yerself misses”
“Do I look like the bloody type o’ person who knows ‘ow to read? This is a cheapside slum mate yer d*mn stupid if ye think you’ll get a customer ‘ere who knows ‘ow to read. Tell me whot the bloody story is already or I ain’t gonna buy yer paper. Well? Speak up boy I’m waitin’ ” she snapped rather harshly while her hands clenched into soft fists then looked away, this was wasting precious time but she wanted to know what the boy would say. The boy stood silent for a moment as his eyes assessed the situation, he grinned again then let out a low chuckle. “Och! An’ ye think I know whot this gibberish says either? I can’t read neither but if ye want to know, some gents who done bought it earlier where sayin’ it’s ‘bout some weird stuff goin’ on in “Arrisburg. Apparently there was some strange meteor shower over the city. They says it’s a phe-phe-phenom… Ah d*mmit! Some fancy word fer some rare weather. Now that’s that, That’ll be four coppers now lady” he said holding out his palm and gave her an impish grin waiting in great anticipation for his pay. The girl let out a chuckle and smiled “an’ that’s it? That’s whot made the front page? A bunch o’ lame weather reports, whot a rip off. Fine fine ye got yer money’s worth kid.” She dug through her pockets pulling out four dull copper coins pressing each one down onto his palm then took the promised paper from his stack. “Ye know if ye wanna sell more papers to this side o’ town you’ll ‘ave to do much better than to say it’s fer readin’. Tell ‘em blokes it’s fer wrappin’ up their leftover slop or to wipe their assess in the privy or somethin’ like that. I guarantee it’ll be much better than sellin’ readin’ to the illiterate cheapside masses.” The girl folded up the paper tucking it under her arm while the newsboy took in her words methodically with another wily smile “Aye… I’ll take that in mind miss, a pleasure doin’ business wit ye.” The girl chuckled as she walked away and stuffed her hands into her ratty tan overcoat, that kid had enough charisma to charm anyone maybe he would be that lucky one to work his way out of the slums to something decent, she hoped so.
She continued down the block while the rest of the city was screaming with different sounds. From the roar of distant motorcar engines in passing, the loud clanks of machinery in late night factories down to general drone of voices from every soul in the d*mn area. She however focused in on the much fainter and daresay pleasant sounds that the city offered like the clicking of people’s heels rushing down the cobblestone or the faint buzzing of the electric wiring hanging above their heads or the distant whir of a zeppelin hovering over the sepia stained clouds. The slums however produced a much different sound than that of the sky or the shining area to the west, it screamed. It screamed from the sounds of domestic disturbances in thin walled tenements, the cries of babies too hungry to sleep, and the purposeless shuffling stumbles of drunks and poppy milk addicts. It screamed from the sounds of clanging coal carts drawn by long rusted mechanical horses and men tinkering away at the midnight oil. It screamed from the sounds of the homeless beggars who squat in the sh*t lined alleys bundled around old metal bins of trash fires. It screamed with the worn and weary faces of the poor sucking down then smoke of the city before blowing it back from their pipes and cigarettes. It screamed. It was disgusting, wretched, cruel, and it was home…well for now at least.
The girl walked down the rest of the street ignoring the general drone and passing several unsavory characters on her way. There it was, the corner of Cheapside and west Chesterson where her destination laid access to it was however blocked as though the whole street was gathered in a large circle to watch a fight proceed. In the center of that circle stood two prostitutes. One appeared to be the rare lived age of thirty who bore a sickly gaunt color to her face under her smudged red and blue paints while the other was fresh-faced and no older than fifteen also caked with powder and rogue. If she had to guess they were both named Olympia, after all it seemed every d*mn whore and harlot on the bloody continent was named Olympia. It seemed as though one Olympia had stepped over into another Olympia’s territory. “Whot ye think yer doin’ ‘angin’ ‘round me corner! Yer new ‘ere girl so bugger off” the older one spat out viciously hacking out a loud cough and pushed back the younger. The younger Olympia gasped and shoved her back hard “listen ye ruddy ol’ bat don’t ye be tellin’ me whot t’do, this ain’t got yer name on it... an’ even if it did it’s my name too!”
“Bloody young sod ye think ye know ‘ow this works? Ye ain’t no seniority ‘ere I’ve been ‘ere longer so this is my f**kin’ corner!”
“Seniority my ass! This place needs a fresh pair o’ thighs anyways why do they all ‘and ‘around yer sorry droopin’ crotch huh? Ye been ‘ere long enough ye probably givin’ ‘em all the pox ye ugly ol’ hag!”
The older Olympia jumped grabbing at the younger’s hair and the fistfight ensued, each clawing and biting going for cheap shots. At this rate she’d never get inside, the girl and through the brawling girls who seemed to stop the moment they were interrupted. Their bloodlust turned to her instead “whot d’ya think ye are doin’ ye bloody slut! Ye tryin’ to inch in on me territory too? I’ll gut ye like a sow ye ugly lil’ b*tch!” The girl turned her attention to the older one who had addressed her; she could feel the rage boiling inside of her. Her hands clenched tightly into fists and her cheeks reddened in fury, this was not the time to test her but the whore continued “I’ll gut ye an’ the lil’ tart over the-. Without a word the girl swiftly grabbed the older Olympia by her ratty hair and shoved her face hard into the broken brick building. She smashed it in repeatedly until her face drew blood before shoving her to the ground; the girl sent a vengeful kick to her ribs her cheeks now red with fury. The older Olympia was down and was smart enough to stay down while she spat up blood, the younger back down immediately with a look of terror on her painted face. The girl hurled a wad of spit at the fallen woman then pushed her way towards her destination angrily stuffing her newspaper and hands into her coat pockets. The path now opened for her and straight ahead laid the Hag’s Hole Inn.
The Hag’s Hole Inn, a name fitting of its lewd location bearing a matching welcome sign carved in wood of a bawdy older woman bearing an enormous rack and steins in hand. It was a decrepit building like the rest around it painted what once looked to be a rich butter yellow which had since aged and worn into a dull brown as the others around had. The place too was packed with people. The men sipped at barely cleaned tin steins filled with frothy ale and bar maids clad in dark greens and aprons buzzed around with trays of food and beer swishing around to avoid the grabs and pinches of the more foreword customers. The girl walked in with a sigh of relief taking a seat at the corner table motioning the barmaid for a stein of something strong, she needs it to last thought the rest of the night. With a frothy stein of ale in hand she leaned back in her seat and begins to look for her target. Each face is not his; he wasn’t here as the man had said. The bloody b*stard had lied! None of these people were him and she could feel the rage again boil away inside. God all of these idiots in one room was hell. The drunken dregs of society all mixed together in some idiotic stupor; there was nothing more appealing than to gut the whole lot of them in her stewing state. A whole lot of nothing… nothing… nothing but then in the corner of her eye there he was. Bartholomew Curtis Coote sitting dead center of the chaotic bar and the edge of her mouth twisted into a wicked smile. She had found her prey at long last.
Bartholomew Curtis Coote, a man perhaps entering into his mid fifties with silver streaked hair and an overly round face. He is a larger man with arms thick like tree trunks and the beginnings of a scruffy silver beard. He sits alone among the pandemonium with a stein of half finished ale and a plate of cold food looking as nervous a wreck as one could be in a situation like this. Everything about his body language told her so, he slouches over the table with a death grip on him stein handle while his fingers on the other hand tap against the wooden table quickly most likely in sync with the fast beating of his heart. His eyes look around anxiously for a familiar face among the crowd, of his guide out of the city, of the man she had so quickly disposed of. Of what relation was the guide to him other than a use, the man while under her interrogation had a look of longing love for the man he was to smuggle out. What were they? Brothers bound in blood, a longtime friend in need, a lover in desperation to save the man he loved, or was this all a cold hard business deal she was reading to far into? Whatever the case it didn’t matter anymore he was dead in that black encased building and soon enough so would Bartholomew. He began to seat a bit around the brow and wiping off his palms against his worn grey trousers, things are not looking bright in his eyes she can tell that things are not going according to plan. She pulls out her newspaper from her pocket unfolding it and feigns an interest in its nonsensical scribbles; let him stir for a bit while she decides how to isolate the target. How to best isolate him would be tricky, the barmaids and whores who approached him were met with anxious and offensive remarks. His standoffish front would make luring him up under the guise of a good time would not work, she’d have to wait for him to move and let him be the one to be pick the remote location. For what felt like an hour, the jittery man’s face stated all she needed to know his friend was too late for comfort and something had definitely gone wrong It was perfect, she could sense his unease it hit the senses like a foul odor. A look of paranoia seemed to convert his eyes as he canvassed the room once more looking for any sign of hope. He turns around with a shaky breath and comes face to face with his hunter. Their eyes meet for a brief moment; to throw off suspicion she sends him the sweetest smile she could muster before looking away back to her newspaper. He jerked his head back fixating on the table, he cannot wait any longer and with that in mind he swigs down the last of his ale with a shaky hand then bolts for the door. The hunt is finally upon her and she too slinks out far enough for him to feel somewhat easy but close enough to never loose sight of him. Down the street he walks with a nervous quickness in his step, he turns several corners and it is clear he is following through with the plan without his companion, what a foolish mistake. With each twist and turn through the sharp alleys his pace quickens, he senses something is after him but cannot make any sense about it. Each block going a bit faster until the very end of Favershim is met. Freedom only lay a few miles away through the out skirted forest and hilltops beside the rotting slums. He turned and exhaled sharply in horror, he was right he was being followed. He trembles a bit before taking off into a cold sprint into the pitch-blackness of the trees; the air here was not as smoggy as that of the city providing the prey with a few glimmers of illumination of the moon and a handful of stars. He ran, sprinting through bushes and hoping over fallen logs the fool had trapped himself in the d*mned forest and from the looks of it all seemed lost. He tries to shake her off zigzagging through the maze of forest and steep hillside for what seemed to be an hour but found he too was getting progressively more lost with each turn, there was no sign of the original trail to be found.

He slows to see she is no longer there; she had seemed to vanish in mid air. His hands begin to shake with relief stopping to finally catch his breath, where the h*ll was he? There was no sign of anything familiar, he took a slow breath and spied the hill in front of him perhaps he could climb to the top and spy a way back on track. With that in mind he began sprinting once more to the steep hill and preceded to scale it’s side. The bloody fool wouldn’t know what hit him, there stood the girl in the shadows of lower shrubs, the idiot had opened himself in open view and she now had the perfect shot. She pulled out her revolver cocking the hammer back and aimed for his fat head. One finger on the trigger then… BOOM! The loud echo of a crash rang through the entire forest but the sound did not come from her gun. Startled she let out a gasp then turned her attention to the source of the sound where another crash pangs through the air this one much louder. The girl let out a sharp sound of horror and takes off running in the opposite direction as fast as her legs could carry here. The sky above was growing brighter; a massive blinding light was falling from the heavens at an intense speed right for the hilltop where her target was now trapped. She zigzagged through the trees until the loud deafening blast smashed into the hill followed by push of a massive force that followed sent everything around it flying through the air. The girl let out a scream as she too was swept into the massive current flow colliding into the side of a tree and everything fades to blackness. Ringing, there is a strange ringing in her ears as the blurry world around her regains a more level and stable axis. There is a throbbing pain on her left side but the world had finally stopped spinning and the ring began to fade slowly. She blinked several times until her etes were capable enough to see clearly again. The forest around her was gone, the trees around her a partially charred with their tips and licked with orange fire, toward the hilltop the area is rubble, ash, and trees torn completely from their trunks. She girl staggered to her feet with a loud groan and began to feel around for injury. There was bruising, definite bruising all over her body but nothing broken or burned she had barely escaped. What the bloody h*ll happened? The girl let out a shaky breath making her way towards the destruction that had leveled a small half of the hill. The area is thick with rubble and it proves to be a difficult climb up, the face of her side of the hill seemed to be intact but what lay on the other side was a mystery. She climbed up carefully reaching the very top, Bartholomew on the other hand had not been so lucky, he too was at the top or at least half of him was. The blast had ripped him nearly in half and what was left of him was now a smoldering charred body, he was nearly unrecognizable. The girl gulped nervously, feeling quite sick to her stomach at the sight of his blackened remains and dared to peer over the side of the hill. The trees that had so densely covered the area were completely gone with not a lick of ash to remember them by but what now lay in their place was a massive silver shining crater. She took a step closer and gasped in absolute horror. All sides of the crater seemed to be lined with soft silvery glass from the impact that stretched for nearly a half mile and lying in its center was a man. The man from where she could tell looked to be unconscious; everything about him was unnervingly unearthly. His skin was rather pale and tinged with what looked to be gold; his hair too was moon white without a speck of any color in it. His clothing looked foreign but it was hard to tell under as they were singed and spotted with black soot. The girl let out a shaky breath and immediately went for her knife she had hooked onto her belt beside her revolver “w-whot the bloody h*ll is that!”

OMG.... I totally forgot my word count Wednesday(s)

Word Count Wednesday(4/26/17)

What I am working on now?

Holy crap I must have had my brain taken over by aliens the last two months because I totally forgot the last two months worth of of Word Count Wednesdays... opps sorry. I just finished my narrative assignment for chapter 2 which I am really excited about and about to start outlining a bit of chapter three. I'm also trying to outline the basis for our script, I'm trying to go for a modern setting following two homicide investigators tracking down a serial killer targeting female Polish immigrants in Chicago. I'm also trying to finish up all of my half finished experiments, I'm a bit lost on the poetry i'm suppose to submit but hopefully I can muster something good.

Word Count: (Counting just this week) + 4,000 words Woohoo!

How do I feel about the process?

I have been going through a bit of a dry spell going, in the last month or two I was very ill, moved to a new residence (still under construction and stuffed living in a single room with three other people), and lost one of my beloved cats. It was too chaotic to write and when I had time there was no spark. However, when writing the narrative this time it began really slow but once I had my momentum going I wrote 10 straight pages in 4 hours which I have never done in my entire life! I feel like i'm on cloud 9 and it's given me the confidence to be able to get through all of my projects at a much quicker pace.

What am I reading now?

Guinevere, Queen of the Summer Country by Rosalind Miles (Haven't picked it up since the move but I will be returning to this mediocre bit soon enough)

Word Count Wednesday (3/1/17)

What am I working on?

I'm seriously considering working on a chapter two for our chapter project, I have the story nearly completed in my head and it was rather fun to work on. I'm also working on my in media res experiment set in a medieval fantasy world; I think I'm going to start the story with my MC and his army pillaging an enemy village/sacred temple and getting cursed by the high priestess for trying to steal from the gods. Actually I think I might create maps for all of my stories so it can add some scope to the whole thing, I love world building it's one of my favorite things to do. I'm going to attempt to write a poem this week and begin again on the magical realism story as well as the children's book.

Word Count: 1,154 (YAY!)

How do I feel about the process?

It's getting better i'm still a bit slow but I found that lately i've had like an hour or so where I can type up a storm without receiving a loss for words. It's exciting that i'm slowly getting out of my period of writer's block (HUZZAH HUZZAH)
